Commercial Renovation — 87 East Bay Street
Architect: Bill Huey & Associates
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
87 East Bay, circa 1792, is the largest of all the buildings on Rainbow Row. The project included a complete renovation, including interior gutting of the structure, exterior finishes and a new infastructure. Prior to the renovation, the building housed 6 vacant apartments. The new luxury condominiums offer custom amenities tailored to each owner's tastes as well as new water and power distributions.
Construction on this project posed many challenges from historical preservation to the close proximity of buildings beside it. There was no parking and no construction material storage area. The original staircase from the 1700's was dismantled, numbered and stored in the attic of the building for future generations to find. The building's exterior stucco finish was repaired to it's 1700 appearance, and millwork was salvaged to it's original condition. To further perserve the historical value, we used existing brick and interior doors and trim, as well as reconstructing the plaster reliefs and details to their original condition.
